How to Fix Blurry Webcam in Windows 11

A blurry webcam on Windows 11 can be irritating and embarrassing, especially if you’ve scheduled important video conference calls. The good news is that fixing it is usually not a tricky business unless there is a hardware issue with the terminal.

Here’s how you can try your luck with these fixes for a blurry, uncooperative webcam on Windows 11.

But first, some basic tips for fixing a blurry webcam

The first step, before instinctively restarting your Windows 11 device, is to gently clean the webcam with a damp microfiber cloth, which moistens debris and cleans the camera lens. The key is to start cleaning from the center outward, using circular motions to remove any stubborn stains, dirt or substances from the webcam.

If the webcam is still blurry, restarting your Windows device is another quick fix for minor technical issues. This is a popular option because it frees up RAM and reduces RAM usage in Windows by restarting all running processes.

Also, if you’re using an external webcam and you’re sure it’s compatible with Windows 11, check that your webcam is still working properly. Test this by connecting your external webcam to another computer and running its Camera app. If the image is still blurry, you know it’s the webcam that needs fixing.

If these quick fixes didn’t fix your blurry webcam, let’s dig deeper to get to the root of the problem.

1. Check for internet connectivity issues

A weak internet connection can cause a blurry webcam. If you are using a poor internet connection, it may interfere with the quality of the video and cause lag. So if your webcam is malfunctioning while chatting, your internet is likely the culprit.

To confirm this, open an offline software like the built-in Camera app on all Windows devices. You can do that according to our guide on how to turn on the camera in Windows 10, but don’t worry; the steps also work on Windows 11.

If your webcam is working fine without an internet connection, chances are your connection is to blame. As such, you might want to upgrade to a better internet service provider or try adjusting the length between your Wi-Fi router and your device to see if that fixes the problem.

2. Reset the Camera app

The problem may be with the Camera app itself. Resetting the app can fix all camera related issues and visual blurring that compromise image quality.

To reset the camera:

  • Right click on the Begin icon and choose Apps and features.
  • Locate Camera in the list of available applications and click on the three buttons next to it.
  • Head to Advanced Options > Repair.
  • If webcam blurring persists, opt for Reset Next.
  • Then you will get a pop-up message confirming if you want to continue. Hit Reset Again.

3. Reinstall camera drivers

If your webcam is still blurry even after resetting the Camera app, your webcam drivers are probably outdated. There is nothing to worry about as it is a fairly simple problem to fix.

In such scenarios, your best option is to reinstall the webcam drivers. The process does not require much hassle and the following steps should be done:

  • Open Device Manager by right-clicking Begin or by pressing Win + R and typing devmgmt.msc
  • Locate it Camera tab and expand it by clicking the arrow next to it. This reveals all cameras (built-in or external) connected to your Windows device.
  • Right click on the misbehaving webcam in the list and select Update Driver.
  • This does it for many users, but if the problem persists for you, tap Uninstall device Next.
  • A dialog box may appear with a warning, but proceed by selecting Uninstall Again.

Once your webcam drivers have been uninstalled, restart your PC. This will prompt your operating system to find and reinstall the necessary drivers.

4. Reinstall graphics drivers

If the problem persists, the graphics drivers may be the cause of a blurry webcam. Reinstalling graphics drivers requires much the same process as reinstalling camera drivers, and here’s how to do it:

  • Right click on the Begin icon and choose Device Manager in the context menu.
  • Here, search Screenshot taken. Double click on it.
  • Right-click on the option that appears and select Properties.
  • Head to the Drivers tab, and try your luck with Update Driver first.
  • If that doesn’t work, press Uninstall device Then, and restart your PC.

If you’re using an external graphics card, you can find the latest drivers on your manufacturer’s website. For example, the Nvidia driver download website and the official AMD driver website are useful if you have an Nvidia or AMD graphics card.

5. Run Camera Troubleshooter

If the previous solutions have not been verified, running the Windows 11 built-in camera troubleshooter may be a viable solution. It will automatically diagnose and fix whatever seems to be causing a blurry webcam.

To run the Windows 11 Troubleshooter:

  • Hurry Win + I to open Windows Settings.
  • Move towards System > System and scroll until you find Troubleshoot.
  • Then go to Other convenience stores and find Camera from the application list.
  • Hit To run and let the camera troubleshooter fix your blurry webcam.

6. Check for optional updates

Updating your Windows device can be a good last resort when all else has failed. Since Windows updates fix bugs and bring security patches, updating your device can fix the blurry webcam, especially if a bug was responsible for it. Therefore, it’s always worth checking Windows Optional Updates for a webcam fix. Here’s how:

  • Open Settings by tapping Win + I.
  • In the left menu, click Windows Updates > Check for Updates > Advanced Options.
  • Press open Optional updates where you will see a display of all available updates. Go ahead and install the appropriate ones.
  • Once done, restart the PC.
